Iran’s Mehdi Taremi Missing Out on Inter Milan’s Club World Cup: Escalating Tension Between Israel and Iran

Inter Milan forward Mehdi Taremi is unable to leave Iran and join his team in LA due to the closure of the country’s airspace.

Mehdi Taremi, a forward for Inter Milan, may miss the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States. He has been unable to leave his home country amid Iran’s ongoing exchange of aerial fire with Israel, which has resulted in the closure of Iran’s airspace.
Taremi, who was expected to join his team in Los Angeles to prepare for the 32-team tournament, is likely to miss the first match on Tuesday, and potentially the entire competition. The striker, who captains the Iranian national team, was named in Inter Milan’s squad for the tournament.
Inter Milan has been in contact with the Iranian authorities in Italy to try and find a solution, but it is currently impossible. Taremi is reportedly in a safe place and sheltered from the bombings in Tehran.
The Iranian side will face Monterrey FC, a Mexican team, at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, Los Angeles, on Tuesday. However, Taremi is unlikely to be a part of the squad.
Taremi joined Inter Milan on a three-year contract in July 2024 and has scored three goals in 43 appearances for the team. He was also a goal scorer for Iran in their AFC World Cup qualifying match against North Korea on June 10.
The closure of Iran’s airspace was triggered by attacks from Israel on Friday morning, which led to Iran responding with their own attacks. Both countries have been involved in an ongoing exchange of fire since then.
Inter Milan and Monterrey FC, along with Argentinian club River Plate and Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds, are placed in Group E for the Club World Cup.
