Israel’s military has launched multiple bombings in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, within a week, resulting in at least three deaths and damages to a fragile ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah established four months prior.
On Tuesday, the Israeli forces attacked the southern suburb of Dahiyeh in Beirut without prior warning, wounding at least seven more people according to Lebanese health authorities.
Israel’s military stated that the bombing targeted a Hezbollah member instrumental in planning imminent attacks against Israeli civilians; however, they provided no evidence to support their claim.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun denounced the attacks as a “dangerous warning” of Israel’s intentions and called for international support for Lebanon’s sovereignty.
Videos from immediately after the bombing show significant structural damage, including the top three floors of an apartment building and debris on the streets.
There is ongoing concern among The Lebanese government and residents, given that this is the second such Israeli bombing in less than a week and a violation of the ceasefire terms as agreed in November.
Al Jazeera’s reporter from Beirut, Resul Serdar, stated that the identity of the targeted individuals remains unknown and that rescue operations were still in progress.
There are concerns that the peace is fragile and could easily be disturbed by further actions from either side, leading to potential renewed conflict.
Hezbollah’s leadership has suggested they may have to consider alternative responses to Israel’s ongoing attacks if the Lebanese government does not take a stand.
Some analysts place blame for the prolonged tension on the United States, claiming that the Trump administration’s support for Israel has encouraged these military actions.
