An Israeli airstrike on a media tent near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, early Monday left at least two dead and several journalists injured. This incident, along with the recent death of journalist Islam Meqdad and her family, adds to the toll in what has been declared the deadliest ever war for media workers, according to the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. The report indicates that since the beginning of the war in response to a Hamas attack on southern Israel, Israeli forces have killed 232 journalists and media workers, surpassing the total number of media casualties in both World Wars, Vietnam, the Yemen wars, and the US war in Afghanistan combined. While many journalists have been directly targeted due to their work, many more have been caught in the crossfire amid Israel’s sustained bombardment of the enclave. Isolating journalists’ deaths among the civilian population’s broader suffering is a complex task, but reports and investigations by RSF have documented at least 35 cases where journalists were killed likely due to their profession. This situation highlights a grave concern over the targeting of journalists in the ongoing conflict.
