Kamaishi’s Missing Spirits: Documenting the Tsunami’s Unseen Victims

In Japan, a number of taxi rides have unveiled eerie stories of lingering trauma from the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami.

The city of Kamaishi in Japan was severely devastated by the earthquake and resulting tsunami in 2011, which remains the biggest natural disaster in Japanese history, claiming almost 20,000 lives.

Over a decade later, taxi drivers in the area frequently report encountering “ghost fares” – deceased individuals as passengers. Additionally, there is an increasing sighting of wild deer, which are considered by some to be intermediaries between the physical and spiritual realms. Spending a night with Kamaishi’s taxi drivers reveals a community still haunted by its losses and grappling for closure.

Tsunami Ghosts is the title of the documentary film created by Katharine Round.
