“Finishing my time like this, in front of our fans, is what I always dreamed of,” said Messi.
“Playing in Argentina, for Argentina, is always a joy, regardless of the outcome. I’ve had both highs and lows here, and every moment is cherished.”

Though he remains tight-lipped about his exact retirement plans, Messi hinted that he will retire after the 2026 World Cup qualifiers conclude in 2027, when he will be 40 years old.
Messi captained Argentina to victory, netting goals in the 39th and 80th minutes, with Lautaro Martinez adding to the tally in the 76th.
His two goals now bring him to 36 in South American World Cup qualifying matches, keeping him atop the all-time scoring list for qualifiers.
Teammate Luis Suarez, who retired from Uruguay’s national team, sits second with 29 goals, and Marcelo Moreno Martins of Bolivia is third with 22.

Messi expressed uncertainty about his physical readiness for next year’s World Cup, stating that he wants to enjoy his time in the sport only if his body permits it.
Already leading their group with 38 points, Argentina stands firm in their quest to qualify. Venezuela, currently in seventh with 18 points, is still in contention for an intercontinental playoff berth.
