Luka Doncic of the Lakers displays weight reduction outside of the season in Men’s Health | Basketball Updates

In a recent profile with Men’s Health, the Los Angeles Lakers’ renowned All-Star guard discusses his summer transformation.

Ahead of the new NBA season, attention has been drawn to Luka Doncic and his fitness level prior to joining the Lakers, especially after the trade that moved him from the Dallas Mavericks to Los Angeles. The five-time All-Star is now making headlines again for a new reason: a remarkable physical transformation.

Details of Doncic’s improved physique emerged earlier in the summer and a Men’s Health feature confirmed the extent of the 26-year-old’s efforts to achieve a slimmer and more defined look for his first full season in Los Angeles.

Historically, Doncic has stood at 6-foot-6-inch (1.98 metres) with a weight of around 230 pounds (104kg), which despite subjective opinions, did not impede his performance last season where he averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists.

However, the Mavericks had raised concerns about his fitness, which may have factored into his calf injury that required a month of rehabilitation leading up to the eye-opening trade.

Luka has been combatting a series of injuries including those to his ankle, calf, knee, and back, yet he has persevered, playing 61 games in most seasons, only dropping to 50 in his year split with the Mavericks and Lakers.

Adopting a healthier diet devoid of gluten with minimal sugar and focusing on protein to support his demanding workout routine, which includes weightlifting and basketball drills, Doncic has made a noticeable improvement in his physique. “I want to be the best version of myself and take care of my body,” he expressed to Men’s Health. “This year, my team has made significant strides, but this is only the beginning. I have to keep pushing forward.”

In addition to LeBron James’s decision to extend his stay with the Lakers until the 2025-2026 season, the team has bolstered its roster with the acquisition of centre Deandre Ayton, guard Marcus Smart, and forward Jake LaRavia.

Although his current weight was not disclosed in the profile, photographs reveal a more defined muscular build, the result of workouts that initially kept him off the court but saw him return to training in June. He is set to represent Slovenia in the EuroBasket competition in August.

“Each summer, I aim to improve different aspects of my game,” Doncic remarks. “My competitive nature means this summer was a bit different, it inspired me to strive to be even better.”
