A gas pipeline leak owned by the state-run Petronas has resulted in a massive fire near the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, causing injuries to over a hundred people during the public holiday for the Muslim Eid celebration. The fire, which started with an explosion and a fireball at 8:10 a.m. on Tuesday in the suburb of Putra Heights, central Selangor state, threatened nearby villages.
The leak from the gas pipeline belonged to state-run energy firm Petronas, and the blaze quickly spread due to the explosion. At least 49 houses have been damaged and 112 people injured, with 63 being sent to the hospital for burns, breathing difficulties, and other injuries. The state’s disaster management unit is currently ongoing with rescue efforts for trapped residents, and some individuals have already been treated for burns.
According to Selangor’s chief minister, 82 people had been rescued so far, and the rescued individuals are temporarily staying in a nearby mosque until the situation is under control. The powerful explosion caused pictures and videos of the fire to go viral on social media, with some residents reporting feeling a strong tremor that shook their homes.
Currently, Petronas has isolated the pipeline, and shutting the valves will eventually extinguish the fire. Additionally, three gas stations near the site have been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure, and investigations into the incident are underway.
