Medical team of Maradona to face trial over footballer’s death | Football Updates

Seven medical professionals will face trial for their alleged negligence in the death of late Argentinian football icon Diego Maradona, marking four years since his passing in November 2020. Accusations include providing inadequate care that resulted in a “prolonged, agonizing period” leading up to his death, which occurred while he was recovering from brain surgery at the age of 60.

A four-month trial is set to begin in San Isidro, Buenos Aires, involving over 100 witnesses including family members and medical staff who treated Maradona over the years. The defendants, if convicted, could face imprisonment ranging from eight to 25 years. Maradona’s death from a heart attack, discovered in a rented house in Buenos Aires after his hospital discharge, plunged Argentina into mourning, drawing tens of thousands to pay their respects as his body lay in state.

The accused include neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, and others, who are charged with providing reckless and deficient treatment. They deny any responsibility for the star’s death. The public prosecutor’s panel of medical experts suggested Maradona would have had a better chance of survival with proper treatment in a medical facility. The case highlights concerns over the quality of care provided to Maradona during his final days, amidst his long-standing health struggles and substance abuse issues.
