According to his wife, the senator who was shot at a campaign event in Bogota is fighting for his life.
The 39-year-old senator, shot during a campaign event, is now “fighting for his life”, as stated by his wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, on social media.
Uribe is a member of the opposition conservative Democratic Center party, founded by the former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe. The two men are not related.
The Democratic Center party condemned the incident as “an act of violence” and stated that the senator was shot from behind by “armed individuals” during a campaign event in a public park in the Fontibon neighborhood of the capital. The statement did not provide further details about Uribe’s condition.
A medical report from the Santa Fe Foundation hospital stated that the senator was admitted in critical condition and is undergoing neurosurgical and peripheral vascular procedures.
Videos on social media showed a man identified as Uribe receiving treatment after the shooting, appearing to be bleeding from his head.
Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office, which is investigating the shooting, reported that Uribe received two gunshot wounds and that two others were also wounded in the attack. A 15-year-old boy was arrested at the scene with a firearm.
The government is offering a reward of approximately $730,000 for information on the case.

The Colombian presidency released a statement condemning the violent attack and calling for a thorough investigation into the events.
Leftist President Gustavo Petro expressed sympathy to the senator’s family and vowed that the investigation would focus on identifying who ordered the attack.
“For now, there is nothing more than hypotheses,” Petro stated, adding that security failures would also be investigated.
The United States’ Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the assassination attempt, blaming Petro’s “inflammatory rhetoric” for the violence.
Reactions from other Latin American leaders were also swift, with both Chilean and Ecuadorian presidents condemning violence and offering solidarity to Uribe’s family.
In Colombia, former President Uribe lamented the attack, stating that it targeted the country’s hope and a remarkable figure within the nation.
Uribe comes from a prominent Colombian family. His father was a businessman and union leader, and his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was kidnapped in 1990 and killed during a rescue operation in 1991 by a group under the command of Pablo Escobar.
Colombia has a history of conflict involving leftist rebels, criminal groups descended from right-wing paramilitaries, and the government.
