In a stunning upset, Jakub Mensik defeats Novak Djokovic at the Miami Open in Florida.
This match, featuring the largest age difference in a Masters 1000 final, showcased Mensik’s speed and innovative play, which Djokovic, at 37, struggled to counter, partly due to an eye infection.
The final, originally scheduled for Sunday, was delayed by heavy rain, leading to Mensik establishing an early lead, breaking Djokovic’s first-serve game and holding a 2-0 advantage. Despite Djokovic breaking back, Mensik’s powerful service and two aces in the tie-break secured the first set for him, marking Djokovic’s first set loss of the tournament.
The second set mirrored the first, with the tie-break again favoring Mensik, who capitalized on his powerful serve to clinch victory, causing him to fall back in celebration.

A monumental victory
The clash between the experienced Djokovic and the young Mensik marked the largest age difference in a Masters 1000 final and the widest age gap in any tour level event since 1976. Mensik was playing his first ATP 1000 final, an event he was not even two years old when Djokovic won his first Miami Open title in 2007.
Djokovic, who had previously defeated Mensik in straight sets at the Shanghai Masters, has won 99 ATP Tour titles and a record 24 men’s Grand Slams out of 76 entered.
