BREAKINGBREAKING,
Myanmar’s military rulers say at least 694 people killed following earthquake that also killed 10 people in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok.
As per Myanmar’s military government report released on Saturday, the Mandalay region, which is the country’s second-largest city and near the quake’s epicenter, saw at least 694 casualties and almost 1,700 injuries.
In Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, located about 620 miles from the epicenter in Myanmar, there have been about 10 additional fatalities confirmed.
An infrastructure damage report from Myanmar’s military reveals that roads, bridges, and buildings were affected, leading to civilian casualties and injuries. They have been conducting search and rescue operations in the affected areas.
The earthquake, measuring 7.7 in magnitude with a subsequent 6.7-magnitude aftershock, struck northwest of Sagaing in central Myanmar in the early hours of Friday.
Although the quake caused destruction of buildings, interrupted bridges, and buckled roads across various parts of Myanmar, the true extent of the disaster remains obscured due to poor communication in remote areas.
In Bangkok, rescuers worked through the night on Friday to save workers trapped after a 30-story building under construction collapsed in seconds.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt assured that efforts are being made to save those still unaccounted for, despite the collapse of the building near the Chatuchak weekend market, a popular tourist spot, claiming around 10 lives and leaving up to 100 workers still missing.
“Our priority is acting as quickly as possible to save them all,” the governor said.
Bangkok city authorities plan to deploy more than 100 engineers to assess the safety of buildings across the city as they received over 2,000 reports of damage.
