A developing story reports that explosions and a significant fire have occurred in Port Sudan, following the ongoing civil war in Sudan. Drones believed to be launched by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are suspected of targeting a fuel depot in the city, in addition to other locations around the port and airfield. Residents in the area have provided accounts of the incidents, which began on Sunday when a military base near the only operational international airport in the country was hit by drones. More fuel depots in the city were targeted by drones on Monday. Both attacks have been attributed to the RSF by military sources, though the RSF has not taken responsibility. The conflict, which began in April 2023 over a dispute related to the transition to civilian government, has resulted in the displacement of more than 12 million people and has left half of the Sudanese population in a state of acute hunger, according to the United Nations. The latest attacks on Port Sudan, which mark a new level of escalation in the conflict as the city had previously been free from ground or air assaults, have raised concerns among neighboring countries, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, as well as the international community.
