United States President Donald Trump is set to issue an executive order that mandates voter identification for all voters, with no exceptions. This move follows Trump’s repeated claims of widespread fraud in his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden, despite no substantial evidence to support such assertions.
Trump stated via his Truth Social platform, “Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!!”
In addition, Trump advocates for the elimination of mail-in voting except for individuals who are very ill or in the military stationed far away.
Trump and his Republican allies have consistently and without basis accused non-citizens of voting, a criminal act that occurs rarely.
In pursuit of this overhaul, Trump has long insisted on replacing electronic voting machines with paper ballots and manual counts, arguing they are more secure, despite the fact that election officials deem such methods less efficient and accurate.
In a broad executive order signed earlier this year, Trump included stipulations for voters to provide documentary proof of citizenship to participate in federal elections and for all ballots to be received by Election Day. However, parts of this order were blocked by a judge in April who ruled that these powers lie with states and Congress, not the president.
Trump has also vowed to abolish the use of mail-in ballots and voting machines in the leadup to the 2026 midterm elections. These elections will serve as the first nationwide assessment of Trump’s policies since his return to office in January.
Democrats are poised to leverage this electoral occasion to challenge the Republican dominance in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, which would thwart Trump’s legislative agenda.
