DC, USA – According to a recent Gallup poll, only 32 percent of Americans currently support Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza. This figure represents a drop of 10 percentage points since September 2024, reflecting a growing anger among the public in response to increasing reports of atrocities committed against Palestinians.
The poll, which was released on Tuesday, also highlighted a significant partisan divide on the issue. Approximately 71 percent of respondents who identified with the Republican Party expressed approval of Israel’s conduct, whereas only 8 percent of Democrats shared the same sentiment.
Interestingly, the study showed that a majority of respondents, 60 percent, expressed disapproval of Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
Shibley Telhami, a professor at the University of Maryland and the director of the Critical Issues Poll, explained that the latest poll results indicate a growing generational divide, particularly among young Americans who perceive the situation in Gaza as emblematic of the nature of the state of Israel. Telhami also stated that only 9 percent of respondents under the age of 35 approved of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, while only 6 percent held a positive view of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Despite a shift in public opinion, the United States has continued to provide unwavering support for Israel, offering billions of dollars in military aid and diplomatic backing at the United Nations. This stance has been consistent across both the Trump and Biden administrations, who have both supported the Israeli actions in Gaza, which have led to the killings of over 60,000 Palestinians, extensive destruction, and severe famine in the region.
However, the disconnect between public opinion and governmental policies may be explained by factors such as voter priorities. According to Telhami, foreign policy is not generally a decisive factor in elections, and issues like abortion and gun control tend to take precedence. Moreover, the influence of pro-Israel groups such as AIPAC has been significant in swaying political opinions, particularly in defeating critics of the Israeli government in Democratic primaries.
Despite these challenges, there are signs of change. Palestine has been rising in public importance, and political victories like Zohran Mamdani’s in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary highlight a growing movement among pro-Palestine supporters.
