The British government is planning to cut bureaucratic costs for businesses by a quarter, according to a statement from the Treasury. British Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to announce an “action plan” to reduce red tape by streamlining the implementation of environmental regulations, cutting the number of regulators in the UK, and reducing costly administrative burdens such as complex guidance on protecting bat habitats. This shake-up is accompanied by 60 measures agreed upon by regulators to enhance the business environment, including the fast-tracking of new medicines and the simplification of mortgage lending rules. Reeves stated that the plan would boost investment, create jobs and put more money in people’s pockets. This announcement comes after Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged reforms to overhaul the UK’s “overcautious, flabby state” and scrap the body overseeing the state-funded health service in England. Starmer’s labour government won a landslide victory in July, with promises to kick-start economic growth and boost living standards after years of stagnation. However, the government has faced challenges in finding savings while keeping growth momentum.
