Russian-Ukrainian conflict: Outline of major incidents, day 1,133 | Updates on Russia-Ukraine war

On day 1,133 of Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine, marked by key events on Tuesday, April 1, the following developments were recorded:

Fighting was ongoing with Ukraine’s Air Force stating the absence of drone attacks since December, though two cruise missiles were intercepted. Russia, however, has launched over 10,700 combat and decoy drones since the start of the year. Russian forces seized control of the village of Rozlyv in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, a narrative disputed by Ukraine who claim active battles continue.

Further clashes were reported along the 1,000km battlefield by DeepState, a Ukrainian blog. Russian shelling resulted in civilian casualties in Ukraine’s Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions, while Ukrainian drones targeted buildings in Russia’s Taganrog city. According to the Institute for the Study of War, Moscow’s territorial acquisition slowed in March to 240 sq km, a significant decrease from previous months, yet Russian progress has continued over the past year.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized the lack of power in Kherson following Russian strikes on a facility.

Discussion on a potential ceasefire remains deadlocked, with German Minister for Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock stressing the need for support from European allies. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that current US ceasefire proposals do not address the root causes of the conflict, leading to Moscow’s reluctance to accept them. The US is considering additional measures to push both Kyiv and Moscow toward negotiations, as tensions persist.

Aid to Ukraine includes a proposed delivery of Taurus cruise missiles from Germany, contingent upon the next chancellor’s approval. A closed-door meeting with military officials from partner countries is set for Friday to discuss foreign troop deployment for future security guarantees. Ukraine received an additional $3.8bn in financial aid from the European Union.

Sanctions against Russia continue to escalate, with Swiss authorities reporting a significant increase in the value of frozen Russian assets. Regional security concerns led Poland to charge a Ukrainian citizen with espionage, Sweden to invest in civil defense shelters, and Finland to withdraw from the treaty banning antipersonnel mines.

Diplomatically, China’s President Xi Jinping will be honored as Russia marks the end of World War II. Russia also met with its counterpart from Bosnia’s ethnic Serbs and discussed various global issues with China, including the situation in Ukraine. Tensions between France and the Kremlin persist, leading to delays in the appointment of new ambassadors. Discussions between Ukraine and the US continue over a potential agreement granting American access to Ukrainian resources in exchange for additional support.
