Russians Launch Assaults on Kyiv, Killing Three, Prior to Peace Talks in Saudi Arabia | Ukraine-Russia Conflict Updates

Monday is expected to see meetings between delegations from Ukraine and Russia as Zelenskyy calls on allies to urge Moscow to halt its attacks.

At least three people lost their lives, including a five-year-old child, due to Russian drone strikes on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, overnight. Ten others were injured, as reported by the Kyiv city military administration on Telegram on Sunday.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko mentioned on Telegram that emergency services were sent to various city districts due to fires and damage caused by the strikes.

Earlier, Ukraine’s air force stated that Russia launched 147 drones overnight, targeting several regions. They claimed that 97 drones were shot down, while 25 failed to reach their intended targets.

Zelenskyy stressed the need for “new decisions and new pressure on Moscow” to put an end to the strikes and the ongoing war.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence stated that its forces “destroyed and intercepted” 59 Ukrainian drones overnight, mainly in the Rostov and Astrakhan regions.

Ceasefire Talks

On Saturday night, United States President Donald Trump stated that efforts to prevent further escalation of the war were “somewhat under control.”

During an interview on Air Force One with Clay Travis, the founder of Outkick, Trump emphasized the importance of having rational discussions and maintaining good relationships with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy in negotiating an end to the conflict.

Last week, Trump had separate discussions with Putin and Zelenskyy aimed at ending the war that began in 2022. These talks followed Trump and his Vice President JD Vance’s criticism of Zelenskyy at the House.

Although the talks did not result in a complete 30-day ceasefire, Putin agreed to halt Russian attacks on energy infrastructure for the duration. However, both sides have accused each other of targeting such sites since then.

According to reports, Russian and Ukrainian delegations are expected to hold separate meetings with US officials in Saudi Arabia on Monday as part of the peace negotiations initiated by the Trump administration.

Senator Grigory Karasin, leading the Russian delegation, expressed hope for achieving some progress during the meeting. Alongside colleague Sergei Beseda from the FSB intelligence agency, Karasin stated that they would approach the talks with a firm and constructive mindset.

A senior Ukrainian official told AFP that Kyiv aims to secure agreement on a partial ceasefire covering attacks on energy, infrastructure, and at sea.

Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Rustem Umerov, is expected to attend the negotiations.
