Belgium responds to Rwandan diplomats being unwelcome after strained ties over their involvement in the DRC conflict.
The Rwandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation accused Belgium of undermining their actions in DRC’s ongoing conflict, leading to the severance of diplomatic relations.
Belgium expressed regret over Rwanda’s decision, stating it was a disproportionate measure and preferred a dialogue over a lack of engagement.
This action follows after President Paul Kagame accused Belgium of advocating for international sanctions against Rwanda over the conflict in the eastern DRC.
The Rwanda-backed M23 armed group’s advancement in DRC’s mineral-rich east has raised concerns; a UN report suggests that Kigali has control over the group with around 4,000 troops in the country.
The Congolese government reported that the conflict has resulted in the deaths of approximately 7,000 people and called for international action.
Additionally, rendezvous for peace talks between the Congolese government and the M23 rebels were announced, with discussions set to occur on Tuesday in Angola.
