A recent series of US military strikes in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, have resulted in at least eight deaths and multiple injuries, according to reports from Houthi-affiliated media. These strikes are part of a broader campaign by the US, with over 800 attacks on Yemeni targets since mid-March, which has now led to the tragic loss of more than 220 individuals. The strikes have targeted various regions including Amran and Saada governorates, with an especially devastating impact on Sanaa’s Thaqban area in the Bani al-Harith district. The latest attacks increase the death toll from US strikes in Yemen to 228, as reported by the Houthis, who claim the strikes have also caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure, including a detention center in Saada.
The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed the strikes and stated that these actions have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Houthi fighters and several Houthi leaders. CENTCOM asserts that these operations are aimed at curbing Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and on Israel, though the exact details of the strikes and future operations remain undisclosed to safeguard operational security.
The escalation of US strikes coincides with President Donald Trump’s increased efforts to pressure Iran, a significant ally of the Houthis, into negotiations regarding its nuclear program. US military operations are being conducted from two aircraft carriers positioned in strategic locations: the USS Harry S Truman in the Red Sea and the USS Carl Vinson in the Arabian Sea. Despite the intensified US attacks, Houthi forces continue their retaliatory actions, including launching missiles towards Israel and US vessels in the Red Sea, as well as downing US military drones.
