The United States government has announced plans to “aggressively revoke” visas of Chinese students studying in the country, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This decision comes as part of the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to tighten restrictions on foreign students attending higher education institutions in the US.
Rubio’s announcement was made through a post on X and a statement titled “New Visa Policies Put America First, Not China.” In this statement, it was mentioned that the US State Department would work closely with the Department of Homeland Security to revoke visas of Chinese students with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or those studying in critical fields.
Additionally, visa criteria will be revised to increase scrutiny on all future visa applications from the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong.
International students in the US have been facing growing uncertainty and increased scrutiny over recent months, as the Trump administration has been implementing various measures to tighten_population_control_116928.jpg control over higher education institutions.
In a recent move, the White House temporarily suspended the processing of visas for foreign students, instructing embassies and consulates not to issue any additional student or exchange visas until further guidance is provided.
The State Department also plans to introduce guidance on expanded social media vetting for all visa applications.
Furthermore, the administration has revoked Harvard University’s approval to enroll international students in response to disagreements between the White House and the university regarding its handling of pro-Palestine protests and diversity programs.
These actions have mainly targeted students involved in pro-Palestine protests on US campuses and those with indirect links to Palestine or those showing support for the Palestinian cause on social media.
The Trump administration claims that these students are spreading anti-Semitism on campus, though the students, lawyers, and activists deny these accusations.
