Seoul Reports: Kim Jong-un Deployments to Siberia on the Rise | War and Diplomacy Updates

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service is reportedly evaluating the size of North Korea’s deployment to the war in Ukraine. According to local media, the South Korean intelligence agency has assessed that North Korea has sent more soldiers to Russia after incurring heavy casualties in Ukraine’s conflict.

The National Intelligence Service stated that Pyongyang reassigned troops to the Kursk region in Russia’s border in early February, following a month-long hiatus. However, the extent of this deployment remains under examination. Previously, an assessment indicated that Pyongyang had initially dispatched around 11,000 soldiers to Russia in support of Moscow’s invasion.

Defense analysts suggest that the North Korean troops, lacking combat expertise and communication with their Russian officers, are vulnerable to Ukrainian drone and artillery attacks. Field commanders in Ukraine have reported that Russian forces are employing North Korean troops to lead attacks and instructing them to take their own lives rather than be captured.

In January, the National Intelligence Service estimated that approximately 300 North Korean soldiers had been killed and 2,700 others injured in combat. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy assessed the number of North Koreans killed or wounded at 4,000.

South Korean and Russian Presidents recently enhanced military cooperation and signed a mutual defense treaty, obligating both countries to provide immediate military support in case of aggression.
