The starship’s 10th test flight has been postponed due to a problem at the launch site in Texas. SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, announced the cancellation about 30 minutes before the scheduled Sunday launch, citing the need to “troubleshoot an issue with ground systems.” The firm intends to try again on Monday.
This failed launch follows a series of unsuccessful SpaceX missions. The Starship rocket’s upper stage explosions in January, March, and May, as well as a “static fire” test in June, were among the mishaps.
Despite this, the Starship, designed to be fully reusable, is crucial to Musk’s ambition of colonizing Mars and NASA’s strategy for manned lunar missions.
If the launch had gone as planned, the Starship upper stage would have separated from the Super Heavy booster, which would have soft-landed in the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, Starship would have briefly ignited its engines to further its journey in space and try releasing its initial batch of mock Starlink satellites.
Despite setbacks, SpaceX must surmount significant technical obstacles, such as making the system entirely and quickly reusable at a low cost and proving that it can refuel super-cooled propellant in orbit.
