The Sudanese military experienced a tragic accident when one of their planes crashed in a residential area on the outskirts of Khartoum, the capital. The incident occurred late on Tuesday during takeoff from the Wadi Seidna military airport in northern Omdurman, resulting in the deaths of several officers and civilians. According to military sources, the crash is believed to be caused by technical reasons. Major-General Bahr Ahmed, a senior commander in Khartoum, was among the fatalities.
The Sudanese military, engaged in a conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, released a statement acknowledging the loss of military personnel and civilians. While not providing further details, they also mentioned that the injured were taken to the hospital and that a blaze at the crash site was contained.
Residents in northern Omdurman reported a loud explosion from the crash, which damaged homes and led to power outages in surrounding neighborhoods. The Karari Resistance Committee, part of a network coordinating aid across Sudan, confirmed that 10 bodies and several injured people were brought to al-Nao Hospital in Omdurman.
The ongoing war in Sudan, which has resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities, began over a disagreement between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamadan Daglo regarding the future government structure. Despite the current military advancements in central Sudan and Khartoum, a Russian-made Ilyushin plane was downed by the RSF in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, the previous day.
On Monday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of further escalation after the RSF and its allies announced their intention to establish a parallel government in the areas under their control. The conflict has resulted in the displacement of over 12 million people, leading to the world’s largest hunger and displacement crises, according to the UN.
