Teen Workers Among 19 Victims of Devastating Road Accident in Egypt | Children’s Rights News

On a regional road in Ashmoun, Nile Delta province of Menoufia, northern of the capital Cairo, a truck hit a minibus carrying workers to work early Friday morning, according to local authorities. The incident killed 19 individuals, most of whom were teenage girls.

The collision happened as the laborers were traveling from their home village of Kafr al-Sanabsa to work in excess of capacity. According to the state-owned newspaper, Akhbar al-Youm, the truck collided with the minibus. Most workers were children, including two who were just 14 years old.

Government statistics show that about1.3 million children are involved in child labor in Egypt, and it is frequent for accidents involving minors traveling to work by minibus in rural regions to occur.

According to officials, three individuals survived the crash and were sent to the General Ashmoun Hospital. Mahmud Gebran, Egypt’s Labor Minister, has ordered authorities to give the deceased’s families compensation of up to 200,000 Egyptian pounds ($4,000) each, and each injured person will also get 20,000 Egyptian pounds ($400).

Ibrahim Abu Leimon, the governor of Menoufia, stated that the cause of the collision would be investigated, and preliminary findings suggested that speeding may have been a significant factor. The Ministry of Transportation has also been asked by Abu Leimon to reevaluate safety measures on the route, as a collision involving a single family claimed the lives of five people in April.

Each year, deadly traffic accidents claim thousands of lives across Egypt. The accident in October 2023 that killed 35 individuals, at least 18 of whom were killed in flames, occurred when a bus and several cars were involved in a horrific collision on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road.
