US president threatens Iran with bombings if Tehran does not come to a nuclear agreement with Washington.
Pezeshkian made these remarks during a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Sunday. He emphasized that Iran is not against negotiations in principle, but before any talks, the US must rectify its past “misconduct” and rebuild trust.
These tensions come amid the escalating relations between the two nations. As reported by Al Jazeera, these tensions reignite talk of nuclear bombs in Iran.
Trump said during a telephone interview with NBC on Sunday, “If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing.”
He also mentioned the possibility of implementing secondary tariffs on Iran if they fail to make a deal, just like President Trump did four years ago.
In March, Trump had also written a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The letter served as a warning, stating that Tehran must agree to fresh negotiations or face a military confrontation.
Ayatollah Khamenei dismissed this ultimatum, and insisted that Iran would only engage in talks through intermediaries.
During his first term as President of the United States, Trump withdrew the US from a 2015 deal between Iran and world powers. The deal placed strict limits on Tehran’s disputed nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.
After the withdrawal and reimposition of sweeping US sanctions, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that Iran had amassed enough fissile material for multiple bombs, but had made no effort to build one.
Iran has consistently claimed that its nuclear program is solely for civilian energy purposes.
The country’s economy has seriously suffered due to the sanctions. Observers have suggested that only a breakthrough in negotiations with Washington could lead to any relief.
Kamal Kharrazi, an adviser to Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei, stated that “not all doors have been closed” to negotiations.
He further said that Iran is “ready for indirect negotiations with the United States in order to evaluate the other party, state its own conditions and make the appropriate decision,” according to state media.
