Novak Djokovic, among others, is part of a group that has filed a lawsuit against governing bodies in tennis, citing unfair treatment of players and disregard for their welfare. The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), which Djokovic helped found, claims that despite their best efforts for change, they had no choice but to take legal action due to the “monopolistic control” of the sport. The PTPA is seeking accountability through the courts. The ATP and WTA have adamantly rejected these claims, emphasizing their commitment to the game’s growth and stability. The lawsuit also addresses issues such as player compensation and the ranking system, which the PTPA describes as “draconian.” Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios supports the legal action, stating that player voices are finally being heard. While player associations are common in sports, tennis is unique in having players function as independent contractors. The legal action has also been initiated in the United Kingdom and the European Union.
