Thailand’s military claims Cambodia breached the truce | Updates on territorial conflicts

Thai military accused Cambodia of violating a recent truce, claiming that clashes persisted despite the agreement to halt the deadly fighting in a disputed border region between the two Southeast Asian nations. According to Thailand’s army spokesman, Major-General Winthai Suvaree, Thai troops responded “appropriately” and in “self-defence” following armed attacks by Cambodian forces in Thai territory shortly after the truce took effect.

Winthai argued that these actions represented a deliberate violation of the agreement and an attempt to undermine trust between the two countries. He stated that Thailand was exercising its right to self-defense.

After peace talks in Malaysia, both Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an unconditional ceasefire starting at midnight on Monday, aiming to end the fighting in disputed areas along their 800km border, which had already killed at least 38 people and displaced nearly 300,000 more in five days of clashes. The ceasefire was to be followed by meetings between military commanders and a cross-border committee to further ease tensions.

However, despite reports of a couple of clashes along the border and statements from the Thai military accusing the Cambodian military of not respecting the ceasefire, the overall situation seemed relatively calm, with sounds of blasts stopping around midnight on Monday and remaining quiet until dawn in Cambodia’s Samraong city, close to the Thai border.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed that the front line had eased since the midnight ceasefire. In a joint statement from both countries, as well as Malaysia – which hosted the peace talks – the ceasefire was hailed as a crucial step towards de-escalation and restoring peace and security.

This recent flare-up in cross-border fighting has been the deadliest since the sporadic violence from 2008 to 2011 over the disputed border territory.
