United States President Donald Trump has accused China of violating the mutual agreement to reduce tariffs and trade restrictions on critical minerals. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed that he had made a quick deal with China to avoid triple-digit tariffs for 90 days, preventing a “very bad situation.” He also mentioned that his tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese imports had made it difficult for China to trade with the US market, leading to factory closures and civil unrest.
Trump stated that China has “completely violated” the agreement and blamed the US for being the “nice guy.” He did not specify how China violated the agreement or what actions he plans to take. In response, Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, stated that China’s failure to fulfill its obligations opens up various options for the US to ensure future compliance. Miller also expressed hope that China would open up to American businesses in the same way that the US has been open to Chinese businesses for a long time.
China’s embassy in Washington stated that Beijing has maintained communication with the US since the Geneva talks but expressed concerns about the recently imposed US export controls. They urged the US to correct its actions and cease discriminatory restrictions against China. Furthermore, Reuters reported that global auto executives raised concerns about a potential shortage of rare-earth magnets from China, which could lead to the closure of car factories within weeks. Without reliable access to these elements and magnets, automotive suppliers won’t be able to produce critical components for vehicles.
