A new Federal Register notice reveals that US President Donald Trump’s administration plans to revoke the temporary legal status of 530,000 immigrants, including Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans, starting April 24. The decision marks the latest step in Trump’s stringent immigration policies. In 2022 and 2023, former President Joe Biden had implemented a parole entry program allowing these immigrants to enter the US by air, given they had US sponsors. This decision came amid strained diplomatic relations with these nations and Biden’s efforts to combat high levels of undocumented immigration from these countries. Critics, including American citizens and immigrants, have sued the Trump administration to reinstate these humanitarian parole programs. According to Trump, these programs surpassed federal law boundaries, leading him to call for their termination in a January executive order. Removing legal status from these immigrants could leave many vulnerable to deportation unless they seek alternative forms of legal protection or status. The Department of Homeland Security argues that revoking parole status could expedite a deportation process known as “expedited removal.” This move has been criticized for potentially causing chaos and heartbreak for families and communities across the country. Additionally, Trump indicated he might also revoke the parole status of 240,000 Ukrainians who sought refuge in the US during the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
