Here are the updates on Wednesday, August 6:
Fighting
- On August 5, Russian forces attacked six settlements in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to 10 more in Lyman and Vovchansk.
- Additionally, Russian forces shelled a railway station in Lozova, leading to the death of a duty mechanic and injuries to four other railway workers among the 10 total injured.
- A total of 431 Russian air attacks were launched on 16 settlements in Ukraine’s Zaporizhia region, killing four people and wounding three others.
- Ukraine’s Svatovsky district in the Luhansk region experienced a Ukrainian drone strike that killed four water utility employees. The death toll rose to five after a wounded worker passed away in the hospital.
- A Ukrainian drone attack killed a 30-year-old man and injured a 51-year-old woman in their car near the Russian-occupied village of Nyzhnia Duvanka in the Svatovsky district on August 1.
- Ukraine’s military intelligence stated that Ukrainian forces killed 334 Russian troops and wounded more than 550 during a failed attack on Ukraine’s Sumy region, a claim Al Jazeera cannot confirm.
- Andriy Yermak, Ukraine’s presidential chief of staff, announced that India-made components were found in Russian drones used for attacks on Ukraine, though Al Jazeera cannot independently verify this claim.
Military aid
- Sweden, Norway, and Denmark have agreed to contribute approximately 5 billion Norwegian crowns ($486.16m) to purchase US weapons for Ukraine.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the funding, stating that Ukraine secured an additional $500 million from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark for US weapons.
- The US Department of State approved the potential sale of repair and sustainment support for M777 howitzer artillery guns, and transportation and consolidation services to Ukraine from BAE Systems and other US contractors for an estimated total of $203.5m.
Regional security
- The German air force will deploy five Eurofighter combat aircraft in Poland in response to a Polish request, aiming to serve as a deterrent before joint Russian-Belarusian military drills.
- Lithuania has requested NATO’s assistance in strengthening its air defenses after two military drones crossed into its territory from Belarus last month.
Ceasefire and sanctions
- Zelenskyy engaged in a “productive conversation” with US President Donald Trump, with a focus on ending the war.
- Trump mentioned on CNBC that declining energy prices may force Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
- “If energy goes down enough, Putin is going to stop killing people,” Trump said. “If you get energy down by another $10 a barrel, he’s going to have no choice because his economy stinks.”
