These are the key events on the 1138th day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

This is the current situation as of Monday, April 7:

Fighting

  • Activating Polish and allied aircraft to safeguard Polish airspace followed Russian strikes in western Ukraine, near the Polish border, according to the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command.
  • Russian missile and drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, resulted in one death and multiple injuries, Ukrainian authorities reported.
  • Freedom, a television channel, announced that a Russian ballistic missile caused partial destruction to a building housing state-owned channels broadcasting internationally.
  • Ukraine’s military intercepted and destroyed 13 out of 23 missiles and 40 out of 109 drones launched by Russia in a nighttime attack. Electronic warfare measures led to the loss of 53 drones, the military stated.
  • The death toll from Russia’s recent missile attack on Kryvyi Rih now stands at 19, including many children, with a further 75 people injured. The attack also damaged 44 apartments and 23 private houses, according to Ukrainian officials. Oleksandr Vilkul, the city’s military administration head, proclaimed three days of mourning starting April 7.
  • Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed its forces conducted a precise missile strike on a restaurant in Kryvyi Rih where a meeting between Ukrainian unit commanders and Western instructors was occurring. It alleged that the strike killed 85 military personnel and foreign officers and destroyed 20 vehicles. The Ukrainian General Staff denied these claims.
  • According to Russia’s Defence Ministry, air defence units “intercepted and destroyed” 11 Ukrainian drones over the Kursk, Belgorod, and southern Rostov regions overnight.
  • Russia’s Defence Ministry accused Kyiv of launching seven attacks on Moscow’s energy infrastructure facilities between April 5 and 6, breaching a US-brokered moratorium on energy strikes. The targeted areas included the Crimean region and Russia’s Bryansk, Rostov, and Voronezh regions.
  • The Kremlin forces purportedly executed an overnight strike using long-range precision weapons and drones against Ukraine’s central artillery armament base and defence industry enterprises involved in drone production.
  • Moscow reportedly gained control over Basivka village in Ukraine’s Sumy region, marking a rare cross-border advancement. Andriy Demchenko, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, labelled this as “disinformation”.

Politics and diplomacy

  • Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, condemned Russia’s “reckless disregard” for civilians following the attack on Kryvyi Rih.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed concern over the insufficient international pressure on Russia amidst the growing frequency of “daily Russian strikes on Ukraine”.
  • Zelenskyy also mentioned that the US failed to issue a statement in response to Russia’s rejection of an unconditional truce, which Ukraine has agreed to.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron advocated for “strong action” against Russia if Moscow persists in “refusing peace”. “A ceasefire is needed as soon as possible,” Macron stated.
  • Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s international economy envoy, informed Channel One television that Russia and the US might resume communication “next week”.
  • Ukraine’s economy minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, announced that Kyiv will send a delegation to Washington, DC, next week to negotiate a new draft of a deal granting the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals.
