Fighting

  • Russian forces launched a missile attack on Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, killing two people and damaging critical infrastructure, including an outpatient clinic, a school, and a cultural institution, according to the central region’s governor, Serhiy Lysak.
  • Another Russian missile attack on the Black Sea port of Odesa resulted in overnight casualties and wounded multiple individuals, including children, officials reported.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russian forces launched over 300 strike drones and more than 30 missiles against Ukrainian cities during the overnight assault.
  • The attacks also damaged critical infrastructure in the Sumy region, leaving several thousand families without electricity, as added by the Ukrainian president.
  • In Russia, the Mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, announced that Russian air defenses downed at least 15 Ukrainian drones targeting the capital early on Sunday.
  • Russia’s Ministry of Defence reported that its air defense units destroyed 40 Ukrainian drones, including 21 over the Bryansk region, on the Ukrainian border.
  • This followed a statement by the ministry indicating that its air defense units had intercepted six missiles and 349 drones over Russian territory on Saturday.
  • Earlier, Russia had to suspend train services for about four hours overnight in the southern Rostov region due to a Ukrainian drone attack, which injured one railway worker.
  • The acting governor of the Rostov region, located on Ukraine’s eastern border, stated that Ukrainian drones had caused fires and disrupted power lines.

Politics and diplomacy

  • Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine has sent Russia a proposal for a new round of peace talks scheduled to occur next week, following the stagnation of negotiations last month.
  • Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accused Russia of forcibly deporting Ukrainians to Georgia, leaving them in difficult circumstances without appropriate documentation, hundreds of miles from their homes. He added that Ukraine has repatriated 43 individuals thus far.
  • Volunteers Tbilisi, an aid group, stated that at least 56 Ukrainians, predominantly former prisoners who had completed their sentences and were subsequently ordered to leave Russia, were being held in inhumane conditions in a basement near the Russian-Georgian border.
  • India expressed its opposition to the European Union’s “unilateral sanctions” against Russia, following Brussels’ imposition of penalties that included a Rosneft oil refinery in the western Indian state of Gujarat.
