These are the key events on day 1,151 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
Here is where things stand on Sunday, April 20:
Easter truce
- In an unexpected development, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a one-sided 30-hour Easter truce on Saturday. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy maintained that Russian “assault operations” and “artillery fire continue”, stating that Ukraine would honor the truce.
- Zelenskyy stated on Sunday that the Russian military was feigning an Easter ceasefire, continuing overnight efforts to inflict front-line losses on Ukraine. He reaffirmed that Ukraine’s proposal to extend the ceasefire with Russia for 30 days after Easter is still on the table.
- Despite the ceasefire, early on Sunday, Ukrainian forces documented 59 instances of shelling and five assault attempts along the front line.
