Understanding the Human Impact of the DR Congo Conflict | Interactive News Update

Ongoing violence and instability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have led to a significant humanitarian crisis, with millions of people forced to flee their homes. The conflict has been exacerbated by the actions of the M23 rebel group, who have intensified their attacks in eastern DRC. In recent months, the group has seized control of key cities, including Goma and Bukavu, leading to the displacement of over 7 million people, with nearly 780,000 forced to flee between November 2024 and January 2025. In addition to the displacement, a quarter of the population in the DRC faces a severe food shortage, with the conflict further crippling relief efforts by looting humanitarian infrastructure and targeting humanitarian organizations. It is among the world’s largest displacement and humanitarian crises, with a significant number of people seeking refuge in neighboring countries.
