United States joins Russia in UN voting regarding Ukraine conflict | Ukraine-Russia war news update

The United States has aligned with Russia in voting on two United Nations resolutions regarding Ukraine, highlighting the growing rift between Washington and its allies. On Monday, the US and Russia opposed a UN General Assembly resolution backed by European countries that condemned Moscow’s actions in Ukraine. In the UN Security Council, they supported a US-backed resolution advocating for a swift conclusion to the conflict without labeling Russia as the aggressor or recognizing Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

The UK, France, and some non-permanent UN Security Council members abstained from the second vote. These votes, coming on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, demonstrate the widening gap among Western allies as President Donald Trump challenges established US support for Ukraine, signaling a shift in foreign policy.

The Trump administration has moved Kyiv and Europe to the sidelines, initiating talks with Moscow about a potential peace deal. Meanwhile, the US president has increased criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The European-backed General Assembly resolution, which garnered 93 votes in favor, expressed concern over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and called for de-escalation and a peaceful resolution, demanding Russia’s withdrawal from Ukrainian territory. In contrast, the US voted against this resolution, along with 17 other countries, including Russia and various others. The US-sponsored resolution avoided mentioning Russian aggression or Ukraine’s territorial integrity and pressed for an end to the conflict while emphasizing the UN’s role in maintaining international peace and security.

European efforts to strengthen the language of the resolution were blocked by Russian vetoes. The resolution was eventually passed by the UN Security Council with the support of ten members, with the Russian UN Ambassador praising it as “constructive step” towards peace and the US Charge d’Affaires recognizing it as a “crucial first step” toward conflict resolution. Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister stated that aggression should be condemned and discredited, not rewarded.
