According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), one out of ten children examined in its clinics in Gaza are suffering from malnutrition, a problem that is becoming more widespread due to the continuous Israeli blockade on humanitarian aid.
Philippe Lazzarini, the director of UNRWA, stated on Tuesday that the blockade imposed by Israel has resulted in “severe shortages of nutrition supplies,” characterizing the suffering experienced by hungry children as “engineered and man-made.”
Lazzarini emphasized that the UN must be permitted to carry out its work in Gaza, especially the provision of “humanitarian assistance on a large scale, including for children.”
“Any further delay to a ceasefire will lead to additional deaths,” he noted, mentioning that over 870 Palestinians who are starving have been killed while attempting to access food through the highly criticized distribution system operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which is supported by Israel and the United States.
Juliette Touma, UNRWA’s communications director, informed journalists in Geneva via a video link from Amman, Jordan, that “medicine, nutrition supplies, hygiene materials, and fuel are running out quickly.”
“Our health teams are confirming that malnutrition rates are increasing in Gaza, particularly since the siege was tightened four months ago on March 2nd,” Touma said.
“One nurse we spoke to mentioned that in the past, he only saw cases of malnutrition in textbooks and documentaries,” she stated.
“As malnutrition spreads across the war-torn region, UNRWA has over 6,000 trucks of food, hygiene supplies, and medical equipment waiting to enter Gaza,” Touma added.
“The world cannot continue to turn a blind eye to this situation,” she emphasized.
“1 in 10 children screened by UNRWA in #Gaza is now malnourished,” UNRWA’s @JulietteTouma briefs the press at @UNGeneva.
Before the war, such cases were almost unheard of.
