The United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Washington vocally dismisses French President Emmanuel Macron’s intention to acknowledge a Palestinian state, as President Donald Trump’s administration concurrently declared they will skip a forthcoming United Nations meeting aimed at a two-state resolution for Palestinians.
Late on Thursday, Rubio criticized via X (formerly Twitter) Macron’s “reckless decision,” arguing that it merely boosts Hamas propaganda and impedes peace efforts.
Earlier, Macron affirmed he would formalize France’s Palestine state recognition at the UN General Assembly in September, aligning with France’s long-standing dedication to a just and enduring Middle East peace.
More than 142 nations, out of the UN’s 193 members, acknowledge or intend to recognize a Palestinian state, yet significant Western powers like the US, the United Kingdom, and Germany have withheld recognition.
The European Union members Norway, Ireland, and Spain previously announced in May plans to recognize a Palestinian state. Macron’s decision will position France, a G7 nation and Israel’s ally, as the most substantial and influential European nation to take such action.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his disapproval of Macron’s stance, claiming it rewards terror and poses a risk of creating another Iranian proxy, arguing that Palestinians seek a state to replace Israel rather than coexist with it.
Underlining US skepticism toward a two-state solution, President Donald Trump has mused about America “taking over” Gaza, which has drawn widespread criticism from human rights organizations and international bodies condemning such plans as ethnic cleansing.
The Trump administration’s stance was further articulated by Washington’s UN ambassador Mike Huckabee, who doubted the US’s commitment to an independent Palestinian state. These views, however, were not embraced by the US Department of State.
On Thursday, the State Department revealed the US would not participate in an upcoming UN conference on the two-state solution, co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia. Tensions are escalating as pressure mounts on Israel to halt its protracted conflict in Gaza following the Hamas-led October 7 attacks, which have resulted in substantial Palestinian casualties.
As of Monday, a joint statement by 28 countries – including the UK, Japan, and various European nations – demanded an end to the Israeli-Gazan conflict and denounced the Strip’s humanitarian conditions as “inhumane.”
