United States President Donald Trump has declared a series of military strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, marking the most significant escalation of military action during his second term.
According to Yemen’s Houthi-run Health Ministry, the strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least nine civilians on Saturday.
“Your time is up, and your attacks must stop, starting today. If they don’t, you will face a magnitude of retribution unlike anything you have ever experienced,” Trump stated on Truth Social, his social media platform.
“I have instructed the US military to launch a decisive and powerful military operation against Houthi terrorists in Yemen,” Trump added.
He emphasized that, “We will deploy overwhelming lethal force until we achieve our objectives,” citing the Houthis’ threats to Red Sea shipping.
Trump also directed a message to Iran, urging them to immediately cease supporting the Houthis. He warned, “If Iran threatens the US, America will hold you fully accountable and we won’t hesitate to respond forcefully.”
Prior to this, Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV reported attacks in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.
According to The New York Times, which cited two senior US officials, the attacks are part of a new large-scale US operation against the Houthis in Yemen.
The air strikes seem to have targeted either an ammunition or missile depot.

The escalation in military actions occurs as the Houthi group declared this week that they will resume attacks on Israeli ships following Israel’s failure to lift the blockade on humanitarian aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip. The Houthis stated they would “prohibit the passage of all Israeli ships” in the Red Sea.
They warned that any Israeli ship attempting to bypass this blockage in the designated operational zone will be targeted.
The Houthis, who govern a significant portion of Yemen, the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest nation, initiated a campaign targeting the critical maritime route in support of Hamas after Israel commenced bombing the Gaza Strip.
These strikes have impacted global trade, leading a substantial amount of maritime traffic between Asia and Europe to reroute around Africa to avoid the Suez Canal.
The Houthis ceased their drone and missile attacks on ships with Israeli connections after a temporary ceasefire in Gaza was declared in January.
However, they threatened to restart these attacks when Israel blocked all aid to the war-ravaged Gaza on March 2, aiming to compel Hamas to release any remaining captives taken during their October 7, 2023 attack.

Earlier this month, the US officially designated the Houthi movement, also known as Ansar Allah, as a “foreign terrorist organization”.
