The United States deviated from its European allies on Monday by refusing to hold Russia accountable for its invasion of Ukraine during the voting on three UN resolutions aimed at ending the ongoing three-year conflict. In the UN General Assembly (UNGA), one resolution called for a “comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine,” urging for de-escalation and the cessation of hostilities. Another US-drafted resolution in the UN Security Council, titled “The Path to Peace,” advocated for an immediate end to the conflict without accusing Russia. The US ultimately abstained from voting on its draft resolution in the UNGA due to amendments targeting Russia. Below is the breakdown of how each country voted on the first of the three resolutions: 93 countries voted in favor, 18 against, and 65 abstained from voting.
