US Imposes Sanctions on Sudan Over Alleged Chemical Weapon Use in Civil Conflict | Sudan War Updates

The United States is set to reduce exports and end government credit lines to Sudan due to the country’s military forces using banned weapons in their conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The decision comes after the State Department’s conclusion that chemical weapons were deployed by the Sudanese military against the RSF. The United States is urging Sudan to halt the use of chemical weapons and adhere to the Chemical Weapons Convention. Congress has been informed by the State Department and the sanctions are expected to be implemented around June 6. They will include export restrictions to Sudan as well as blocking access to credit from the US government. The full extent and timing of the Sudanese military’s use of chemical weapons remain unclear. However, the New York Times reported in January that there were at least two instances of the Sudanese forces potentially using chlorine gas against the RSF. The ongoing conflict between the RSF and Sudan’s army, which stems from a power struggle, has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis with widespread famine and displacement of millions. The US has previously accused the RSF and its allies of genocide and sanctioned key leaders, including General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. Additionally, the US sanctioned Sudan’s military chief and interim head of state, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, for not participating in international peace talks.
