US representative Witkoff to travel to Russia ‘next week’, according to Trump | Updates on the Russia-Ukraine war

US President Donald Trump announced that his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, will be visiting Russia next week in an attempt to broker a deal to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where he hopes to negotiate a ceasefire and stop the violence.

The United States President, Donald Trump, said his special envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Russia next week, possibly on Wednesday or Thursday, to continue discussions regarding the war in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters recently, Trump mentioned that Witkoff’s trip is aimed at finding a solution to the conflict, when asked about potential actions Russia could take to avoid sanctions, Trump responded that a deal is necessary to stop the killing.
Trump has previously threatened to impose severe tariffs on Russia if it fails to reach a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine.
In addition, Trump mentioned the deployment of two nuclear submarines in the region following a tense exchange with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, though he did not specify whether the submarines are nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed, nor their exact locations.
Trump has recently critiqued Russia’s actions in the conflict, describing them as “disgusting,” particularly after a Russian strike on an apartment complex in Kyiv resulted in the deaths of 31 people last Thursday.
That attack came amid a dramatic surge in Russian long-range drone attacks on Ukraine, marking a 14-fold increase from July 2024.
Ukraine anticipates the delivery of a US-made Patriot surface-to-air missile system from the Trump administration, though funding will come from Ukraine’s European allies, not the US.
In retaliation, Ukraine has launched attacks within Russia, resulting in casualties and a significant fire at an oil refinery on Sunday.
A Ukrainian drone strike on Monday ignited a fire at a railway station in Russia’s Volgograd region.
Despite the ongoing hostilities, Russian and Ukrainian officials have been engaging in meetings in Istanbul, Turkiye, in an effort to find common ground.
The latest round of talks resulted in an agreement to exchange 1,200 prisoners, as announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday.
However, Russia has yet to comment on this development.
Witkoff, a real estate mogul and Trump’s golf partner, has previously met with Russian President Vladimir Putin multiple times in his capacity as a special envoy from the White House. He is also involved in negotiations between Israel and Hamas, recently meeting with the families of captives held in Gaza.
