The United States State Department has given its approval for the sale of a significant surface-to-air missile package to the Egyptian government, according to an announcement by the Pentagon. This package, which is valued at $4.67 billion, is a “possible Foreign Military Sale” that includes a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS). The NASAMS package features four AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar systems, hundreds of missiles, and dozens of guidance units. NASAMS, developed jointly by the United States and Norway, is an advanced air defense system capable of engaging enemy aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles.
In addition to the missile system, the deal also includes engineering, technical, and logistical support services to be provided by U.S. government employees and contractors for the Egyptian military. This proposed sale aims to enhance the national security of the United States and improve the security of a key non-NATO ally in the Middle East, promoting the region’s political stability and economic growth.
The prime contractor for this deal will be RTX Corporation, a U.S.-based multinational aerospace and defense conglomerate located in Massachusetts. The necessary certification regarding this possible sale has already been delivered to Congress by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
If the sale is approved, approximately 26 U.S. government employees and 34 contractors will travel to Egypt to provide training and technical and logistical support over an extended period. Egypt, a long-standing U.S. ally in the region, has been a recipient of substantial defense funding from Washington since signing a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. However, there have been recent signs of Egypt warming up to China, including the two countries’ first-ever joint military exercises, known as “Eagles of Civilization 2025,” held in April and May of this year. The Egyptian military described these exercises as part of their broader strategy to strengthen defense ties with China and enhance joint military capabilities.
