Indian security forces have launched an all-out war against Maoist fighters in the mineral-rich tribal region of Chhattisgarh, with the federal government aiming to “wipe out” long-running armed rebellions. The Karrigatta hills forest, which spans across Chhattisgarh and Telangana, has become a “warzone” with more than 10,000 soldiers deployed in the anti-Maoist operation, codenamed “Operation Zero or Kagar”. The BJP-run state government has escalated security operations, killing at least 201 Maoist rebels this year. However, activists and opposition leaders urge the government to cease fire and hold talks with Maoist rebels to find a solution to the decades-old issue.
