The White House has stated that United States President Donald Trump is open to speaking with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, following a South Korea-based news outlet’s claim that North Korea declined multiple attempts by Trump to communicate. The country’s White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said that the Trump administration is willing to continue discussions with Kim, building on the progress made during the 2018 summit in Singapore. Despite the fact that the summit did not deter Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programs, the White House remains open to further correspondence. The question arose in response to a report in NK News, which claimed that North Korean diplomats in New York would not accept a letter from Trump. This outreach comes as South Korea’s new President, Lee Jae-myung, pursues a more conciliatory approach towards North Korea. In an effort to reduce tensions, South Korea recently disabled loudspeakers broadcasting K-pop and propaganda across the inter-Korean border.
