On a recent Sunday, a gathering intended to increase awareness about hostages in Gaza was targeted in an assault in Boulder, Colorado, resulting in injuries to 12 individuals. The primary suspect, Mohammed Sabry Soliman, stands accused of having premeditated the attack over the course of a year. He is furthermore reported to have expressed a vile intention to “kill all Zionist people” during his engagement with law enforcement, based on the court documents.
This violent incident is but the latest in a series of confrontations against Jewish communities and establishments, which has sparked growing apprehension concerning escalating antisemitism within the United States among North America’s Jewish population.
The event unfolded mere weeks after another suspicious individual fatally shot a couple outside the Capitol Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., who were later confirmed to be Israel embassy employees attending a museum event. Additionally, in April, an arson attack was directed at the official residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, just hours after he observed the opening night of Passover.
Adina Vogel Ayalon of J Street, a pro-Israel advocacy group known for its critical stance on the conflict and advocacy for an end to hostilities in Gaza, pointed out that these incidents of hate crimes do not differentiate based on one’s stance on the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Ayalon voiced her concern over the rising fears among Jewish communities and the attack’s implications for free speech.
Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza since October 7th, when Hamas launched an assault resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals (primarily civilian) and the abduction of 251, have drawn international scrutiny. However, the exact toll remains contentious, as verification is hindered by Israel’s constraints on access.
Despite the controversy and increasing discontent across various divides within the American Jewish community, the attacks in Boulder and Washington, D.C. are seen as crossing a critical line between legitimate free speech and political violence. These events have not only shocked the Jewish community but have also rallied condemnation from other groups.
The Muslim Public Affairs Council, for instance, strongly denounced the Boulder incident, citing its contravention of societal values including pluralism and the need for religious and communal safety.
Run For Their Lives, the target of the Boulder incident, is a group that organizes to champion the cause of hostages held in Gaza. While it is politically diverse, including individuals of various backgrounds and political allegiances, safety considerations had never previously suggested the potential for such a violent encounter, indicating a pressing demand for increased vigilance and security among Jewish institutions and organizations.
