An Australian senator protested against a salmon-farming bill in parliament by displaying a dead salmon in a plastic bag. The bill, supported by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor government, aims to protect salmon-farming jobs but also restricts the public’s ability to review and challenge environmental decisions. Some politicians and environmental groups have already raised concerns about salmon-farming practices in Tasmania, accusing them of polluting waterways. Tasmania is the home of the endangered Maugean skate, a fish species dwelling in Macquarie Harbour. Conservationists worry about the potential impact of pollution on these fish. Green Party Senator Sarah Hanson-Young accused the Labor party of “selling out on your environmental credentials” while holding the fish. Senator Sue Lines, the President of the Senate, urged Hanson-Young to remove the fish from the chamber.
