China Criticizes Countries Willing to Compromise on Trade Agreements to Placate the United States

China has criticized countries it believes are kowtowing to the United States in trade negotiations regarding President Donald Trump’s tariffs. A spokesperson for China’s commerce ministry commented on reports suggesting that Washington aims to force governments to restrict trade with Beijing in return for exceptions to US import taxes. The Chinese government opposes these tactics and aims to defend international economic and trade rules, as well as the multilateral trading system. Currently, the Trump administration is conducting talks with trading partners, with Japan and South Korea already having discussions. Since taking office in January, Trump has imposed heavy tariffs on Chinese imports, and other countries have also faced penalties on their goods. The US has imposed taxes of up to 145% on imports from China, while other countries must pay a blanket tariff of 10% until July. The Trump administration stated last week that once new tariffs are added to existing ones, the levies on some Chinese goods could reach 245%.
