Colombia candidate assassinated

A Colombian presidential candidate named Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot three times, reportedly twice in the head, during a campaign event in Bogota. Turbay, who is 39 years old, was addressing a small crowd in a park on Saturday when he was attacked. The police arrested a 15-year-old suspect at the scene. Turbay’s wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, urged the nation to pray for his survival and for the success of the doctors treating him. Turbay’s political party, Centro Democratico, condemned the attack, stating that it endangers democracy and freedom in Colombia. Footage shared online appears to show the moment of the shooting and panic among the crowd. Turbay was shot in the knee and twice in the head and was immediately airlifted to Sante Fe clinic, where supporters held a vigil. The Colombian government and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also condemned the attack, considering it a direct threat to democracy. Turbay had announced his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election in October. He comes from a prominent political family, with links to the Liberal Party. His mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was killed in 1991 during a rescue attempt after being kidnapped by Pablo Escobar’s Medellin drugs cartel.
