Umang Poddar and Prerana Sharma reported for BBC Hindi, covering the closure of an investigation into the disappearance of Indian student Najeeb Ahmed. Originally studying biotechnology at prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi, 27-year-old Ahmed went missing in October 2016 after a scuffle with members of the right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who deny involvement.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the case from city police in 2017, has shut the investigation after exhausting all leads. The CBI’s efforts, which included examining over 500 witnesses and offering a substantial reward, were in vain. Najeeb’s family, however, believes the inquiry was not thorough and plans to appeal the court’s decision, questioning the inability of India’s premier investigative agency to locate a student from a top university. They allege religious interference affected the investigation. The family continues to hope and hosts a memorial march annually.
