DC’s Black Lives Matter Plaza is torn down

Construction workers began dismantling the Black Lives Matter Plaza near the White House on Monday, following threats by Republicans to cut transportation funding unless the plaza was renamed. DC resident Dianne Bradley stated, “You can dig up concrete, but you cannot erase history.” In 2020, Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser had changed the name of the plaza to Black Lives Matter Plaza as a response to President Trump, who had sent thousands of federal troops to the city to combat protesters demanding justice for George Floyd’s murder by a police officer. However, the local chapter of the Black Lives Matter Global Network criticized the renaming, calling it “a performative distraction from real policy changes.”
